Prequel to the Sequel

“Recent” band shoots

Posted in Bands, Personal by brmeyer3 on 02/22/2011

Here are my two most recent band shoots. I’m starting to like what I am doing with my band promos editing wise, and I think I’ve come a long way since I started. But I need to become a lot better and flushing out ideas and concepts for these shoots.

The first was Rosaline and I shot them back in November. Ideas were short between us and we were running out of sunlight, so we just drove to a nearby forest preserve, hiked through a ton of dead reeds, and knocked
out a couple shots.

In January my buddies in Admiral of Black contacted me to take some shots of them for their upcoming album. They talked to their local watering hole and got approved to shoot inside the bar before it opened. I was pretty pleased to hear that because they wanted to do a more of a narrative shot, rather then them posing (which we still did anyways). The guys also had an old Cadillac from the 80’s that they had painted flat back (it looked pretty bad ass) and wanted to incorporate that into some shots too.

Rosaine/Five oh first concert

Posted in Bands, Personal by brmeyer3 on 01/09/2010

On wednesday I made it up to Chicago to catch Rosaline and Five Oh First play at Sub-T. The lighting at Sub-T was terrible, It was barely bright enough in the middle of the stage, and light was pretty much non-existent on the sides. I was stuck shooting my primes at 1.8 the entire time, which was difficult to keep everyone in focus. The venue also had a balcony above the stage, which I really enjoyed and made for some cool photos.

I’ve always wanted to see 501st live ever since I took promos for them, but never was able to make it out to their shows. I’m really glad I got to see them finally, they put on a great show and know how to perform, they weren’t boring to watch. Im really excited to catch them playing at U of I in a couple weeks too. I was anxious to see Rosaline too, even though I’ve seen them live a ton of times, this time was their first show with their new members. They too put on a great performance, and I’m excited for their new record to come out, which they are working on right now.

New members mean new photos

Posted in Bands, Personal by brmeyer3 on 12/22/2009

Yesterday I took photos of Rosaline again. This time half of the band had changed so they needed new shots for their press kit for their new signing to another record label. Im almost positive I know who the label is, but I won’t say because I don’t know if I’m supposed to keep it a secret. We shot at their guitarist house first then drove down the road a little bit into the woods/forest preserve.

Rosaline show

Posted in Bands, Personal by brmeyer3 on 07/06/2009

Thursday night i made it out to Rosaline’s show in Aurora to shoot them. It was the last show of their 2 week tour. The venue i was at i hate shooting in. There is no light at all on the stage, i was pushing what my camera could handle, and the colors of the lighting are¬†absolutely¬†terrible, so i converted a lot of them to black and white.

Rosaline Shoot

Posted in Bands, Personal by brmeyer3 on 05/19/2009

Saturday morning, i had to run up to Chicago to shoot more promo shots for Rosaline. They just signed to Eulogy records and needed some new shots. Their new record sounds really good too, apparently I’m one of the first people to have heard it, let alone have it. We decided to shoot at noon, and they wanted outside shots. I was really nervous going into this because I knew over powering the sun was going to be really hard, and when they said they wanted to shoot at the lake, i almost freaked out because there was no way to power my one strobe. We walked out onto a pier, and i really pushed my camera to its max to get to its sync speed ( ISO 50, 1/200th, F/11) and set my little 430EX on full power. Low and behold i managed to just over power the noon sun by a stop and keep the guys lit and out of the harsh shadows. The only part im not happy with is that the guys were all squinting in the photos, and they still had their backs to the sun. At the end of the shoot, some random dad thought they were fall out boy and telling a story about how they (the real fall out boy) didnt give his son an autograph.
